Wellington Park(ing) Day get’s the sustainability treatment
Pedestrians on Wellington’s Cuba St were able to enjoy tic tac toe with a environmental twist today, as part of the Park(ing) Day event. Designed to celebrate city parks, mundane parking spaces are transformed into a mini 4x2m recreational centre.
Economate’s Katy met this year’s challenge by creating kiwis and high rise building pieces from builder’s scrap waste and off cuts of turf from a local supplier for the board, to develop an interactive and enjoyable tic tac toe game, named ‘Urbanoughts & Wildcrosses’. Each kiwi was handcut from different offcuts of laminated board, reflecting the range of six threatened species. The buildings were laser cut from offcuts of ply.
‘I think it’s very clever and a great message,’ said Gareth, visiting from Australia with his two sons Levi and Jordan, who got stuck straight into a game. The interactive installation proved popular with old and young alike, including visitors from Europe, China and the US. From the recycled pallet scoreboard it was clear Kiwis were winning… naturally.
